Thanksgiving

Get up, put the turkey in the oven, and come to church! On Thanksgiving Day, a service of thanksgiving will be held at the Cathedral at 9 AM. There's no better way to start this day of thanksgiving than by giving thanks to our God.

Thanksgiving Eve

An Interfaith Thanksgiving Eve Community Service will be held on Wednesday, November 27, at 7 PM. We are all invited to gather at St. George's Greek Orthodox Cathedral, 8 Plainfield Street, in Springfield. This service is sponsored by the Council of Churches of Greater Springfield. The guest speaker is Carl Murrell, representative of the Bahai' faith community to the United Nations. The offering will benefit the Emergency Fuel Fund of the Council of Churches.

Scottish Heritage

This coming Sunday, November 24, is Scottish Heritage Sunday at Christ Church Cathedral. We will be led into worship by a bagpiper at the 10 AM service, and we will continue our wonderful tradition of using a moving Celtic liturgy for this special occasion.

Pledging for 2003

Many pledges of financial support for the ministry of our Cathedral in 2003 have been received. We hope to receive many pledges more! If you have your pledge card at home, please bring it to a Sunday service or mail it to the Cathedral. If you do not have a pledge card, we would be delighted to send one to you.

Diocesan History

In conjunction with the Centennial Celebration of our Diocese, a magnificent history of the Diocese has been written. Titled From the Blackstone to the Housatonic, it is a wonderful chronicle of the Episcopal Church in Western Massachusetts from 1901 to the present. Eleanor Parke composed the terrific chapter on Christ Church Cathedral. Copies of the book are available for $10 at the Cathedral office.

Advent Wreaths

On Sunday, December 1 the first Sunday in Advent we will gather in the undercroft after the 10 AM service to make Advent wreaths for our own families and also for members of our Cathedral family who are in nursing homes or are unable to leave their own homes. A sign-up sheet in the hallway will allow us to prepare the necessary materials for the wreath-making session please add your name.

Holiday Bazaar

It's that time again - Get your crafts, ceramics, and baked goods ready! Come and join us as we celebrate the holiday together. If you have any Christmas decorations that you want to donate, please bring them to the church office. The bazaar will be Saturday, December 7, 2002 in the Undercroft. J.C. s Hotdog stand will be there to serve your favorite hamburgs and hotdogs. Please see Kathy Johnston on Sundays or call her at 747-3844 to help out or sell your goodies.

A Vigil for Peace

Every Friday from noon to 1 PM in the Cathedral sanctuary, a Vigil for Peace will be held. The sanctuary will be open, lit, warm and ready with resources c printed prayers and items to read c and you may come and go as you need. The hour will be available for quiet prayer and reflection. A table at the front of the sanctuary will hold items people may wish to share with one another c poems, prayers, articles, photographs, books. We are also developing a list of parishioners, friends and family members serving in the armed forces. If you have a name to add, please let the Cathedral office know. If possible, provide the person s title (rank) and branch of service.

In My Great Task”

The person to be considered in the November mBright Lights” gathering is John Milton, one of the greatest writers in the English language. His passion was to become an epic poet in the service of God. He succeeded.
The specific reading will be a poem titled mIn My Great Task”, and copies of this reading may be found on the table in the sanctuary of the Cathedral. The gathering will be on Monday, November 18, at 7 PM. Please note that the location has been changed. We will gather at the home of Bruce and Chris Rockwell, 51 Perkins Street in Springfield. (If you get lost, call Bruce and Chris at 746-9614).

Cathedral Mission Statement

Have you seen the Mission Statement Art Gallery in the foyer outside the Cathedral sanctuary? It contains a number of fascinating works of art by Cathedral parishioners, each one of which is a personal expression of the meaning of the Cathedral Mission Statement. All of us are also invited to come to the Forum this coming Sunday, November 24, following the 10 AM service. The topic will be the Mission Statement, and the framers of the Statement will lead us in a discussion of how we may make this a mLiving Statement”, rather than a dusty document filed in a back drawer.

Family Carol Sing Saturday Dec. 7

For the seventh consecutive year, the Cathedal will sponsor the Family Carol Sing at 3:00 Saturday afternoon, December 7th. Featuring a holiday Brass Quartet; the UMass Chamber Singers conducted by Wayne Abercrombie; the Springfield Children s Chorus, conducted by Kayla Werlin; and the Cathedral High School Singers conducted by Carol Spinelli, the Family Carol Sing is a marvelous (if Episcopally Incorrect) way to kick off the Christmas season. Come to the Bazaar that day, then come upstairs for 90 minutes of thrilling holiday music. And Hot Chocolate and goodies, served by the Armory/Quadrangle Civic Association!
